It has been around for over half a century. It was invented by accident! In 1956 Noah and Joseph McVicker intended to create a wall-paper cleaner, but instead Play-Doh was born. Joseph's sister, a kindergarten teacher, started letting her students use it as a molding compound for art projects, since standard clay was too hard and messy. And kindergarten students have enjoyed this "accidental discovery" ever since!
It is primarily a mixture of wheat flour, water, deodorized kerosene or another petroleum distillate (which provides the smooth texture), salt, a drying agent such as borax (which deters mold), an alum-based hardening agent, and colorings and perfume. It is non-toxic, non-staining, and soluble in soapy water. When kept in a sealed container, Play-Doh remains pliable, but when exposed to air it hardens in about a day.
And Isaac LOVES Play-Doh. Yesterday, he made an elephant and instructed me that it needs to" go on our computer for family pictures."

Yay for play-doh! We've had that same set for a few years. It is perfect for when they are too young to shape heads, feet etc! We love it!
Nice elephant. Tell Isaac that his Aunt Yiz is proud. :-)
Wow Sarah I have never been so schooled on Play -doh. Thanks for the info. Keep up the good work.
